Japanese people don’t have one

What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

I don’t have a middle name. I think most Japanese people don’t have one. As far as I know, middle names have the following meanings/significance:

  • Religious baptismal name: Christian names are especially common as middle names, and in this case they are called “Christian names.” They are given to Christian children or those who convert and receive baptism.
  • Ancestor’s name: In order to continue the family line, it is common for the first son to be given the name of an ancestor or grandfather.
  • Former surname (for married women): In Japan, when a woman gets married, her last name changes to her husband’s. However, in some countries, women choose to keep their original surname as a middle name.
  • Maternal surname: The mother’s surname is sometimes used as a middle name for children.
  • Name of a respected person: Sometimes, middle names are chosen to express a parent’s wish for their child to become like a respected person.

I recognize that middle names are given with these meanings/significance. If there are any other meanings, please feel free to write them in the comments.

Yes, that’s right. There is no culture of middle names among Japanese people. If you want one, it seems that you need to have an appropriate reason and obtain permission from a public institution such as a court. Personally, I don’t mind whether you have one or not.

That’s a lot to go through to get a middle name! I only have one because it’s custom to have one, otherwise, I’d be just as happy without one.
